Когда мне предложили камеру на тест, я спросил: а что за камера? В ответ я услышал следующее: «камера, которая выглядит раритетно, имеет светосильный фикс и стоит дорого».
Заинтриговало! Беру — и я взял её с собой на 15-дневный фототур. Ну, думаю, — в поездке вся правда и откроется!
Уже по дороге в аэропорт я поймал себя на мысли, что старшие зеркальные братья едут в фоторюкзаке, а Fujifilm X100S уютно устроилась в качестве стильного аксессуара туриста на кожаном шейном ремешке в районе солнечного сплетения. Вот и первый огромный плюс камеры.
Мысль о том, что камера всегда под рукой, словно ребёнку, не давала мне покоя в пути! Это как в первые дни владения iPhone — спортивный интерес сверлит голову: «А если так…, то что получится?» Признаюсь, прямо в аэропорту я сделал пару снимков. Оправдывая себя тем, что это же тест, мне как бы надо во всем разобраться, чтобы правду написать. Это именно спортивный интерес. Люди на тебя не обращают внимания, а ты спокойно снимаешь то, что захочется.
В салоне самолета я размышлял о том, как же удобно иметь такую камеру! Небольшая и прочная, неброская, и в то же время стильная. И такие зарисовки «а-ля репортаж» и жанровые сценки снимать удобно, хотя отсутствие зум-объектива иногда не позволяет в буквальном смысле «достать» нужный сюжет. Эта камера скорее для спокойной и вдумчивой съёмки.
Уже по дороге в отель, начиная с аэропорта, я пытался «думать иначе». Я помнил о цветастой и резкой матрице и красивой 35-мм линзе и выискивал подходящие сюжеты. Вот! Ярко, сочно и очень по-канарски! Информационный центр в аэропорту Тенерифе.
Затем я пытался снимать от пуза, но тут же выявил основной недостаток камеры. Ей бы поворотный дисплей! Чтобы так же, незаметно «подстреливать» интересные зарисовки. Но нет. Я понимаю, что любой поворотный элемент — это слабое место. Эта камера железная и настоящая — прочная и крепкая, поворотный дисплей нарушит этот монолитный корпус и придаст ему хлипкости.
Дальше — больше! Как профессиональный фотограф, я решил испытать эту камеру «по-взрослому». Посмотрим, как она справится с сэндвичем из трёх ND и градиентных фильтров. Как она поведёт себя на длинных выдержках? Рядом, гордо стоя в ряду на штативах с топовыми зеркалками? Очень удобно использовать встроенный ND фильтр! Притом, что можно поставить ещё и внешний — камеру можно брать с собой для любых экспериментов на съёмках с длинными выдержками.
И вот результат.
Я был просто поражён — матрица справляется прекрасно и ни в чём им не уступает! Фильтры и компендиум для них во время съёмки на океане прекрасно послужили блендой, которой очень не хватает.
В течение всего путешествия я боялся контрового света, и такие фотографии сразу удалялись в камере после просмотра. Всё-таки бленда для 35-мм линзы — это необходимость, и я настоятельно рекомендую вам приобрести её. Отсутствие бленды в штатной комплектации, на мой взгляд, — второй недостаток камеры.
35-мм объектив имеет макрорежим, но снимать цветочки и зелень я поручил своей жене. Она с удовольствием находила интересные сюжеты для макросъёмки и увлечённо искала подходящие ракурсы. Она у меня талантливая, и её взгляд на растительность острова перед вами.
Были и более серьёзные испытания. На съёмке в горах мощный солнечный свет закатного солнца перерисовывал реальность в красочную фантастику. Перед вами обычный куст, обгоревший после пожара в горах. Но свет, цвет и графика плюс режим плёнки Вельвия — заставляют посмотреть на простые вещи под другим углом.
Цветущие кактусы у подножия вулкана. Вот где объектив 35 мм оказался идеален! Цветопередача камеры впечатляла с каждым кадром!
В горах мы снимали часто, но многие кадры для этой камеры были недоступны, т.к. одноглазая камера со взглядом на жизнь под углом 35-мм оправы не могла конкурировать с зеркалками, на которых менялись объективы от 70 мм до 300 мм Очень многие кадры снимались с обрывов или из крайних верхних точек, когда невозможно сделать шаг в сторону или отступить назад. С широкоугольным фиксом ничего не сделаешь. Зато там, где картинка выстраивалась идеально — камера доставалась из бокового кармана рюкзака и тут же ухватывала всю красоту.
Разглядывая дома фотографии на большом экране, я ещё раз отметил то, что пара — резкий фикс плюс хорошая матрица, — выдаёт картинку с отличной детализацией! Для такой малютки это серьёзный уровень, сравнимый с Nikon D800E, при меньшем размере. Но большой размер нужен далеко не всем.
Ещё один плюс камеры под рукой — увидел в окно автомобиля красоту, притормозил и снял. Даже в качестве «блокнота путешественника» камера выдаёт очень хороший результат. Вот вторая фотография, сделанная подобным образом. Ещё не доехав до места съёмки, очень захотелось сохранить на память нашу дорогу сквозь облака.
Камера оказалась в идеальных условиях, когда мы прогуливались по улицам местных городков.
Оставляя рюкзак с «тяжёлой артиллерией» в машине, на прогулке по весенним улицам я с удовольствием снимал на Fujifilm X100S. Лёгкий вес и маскировка под любительскую камеру были огромным плюсом.
На стоянках, где располагаются смотровые площадки, мы снимали вот такие открыточки.
А на следующий день, в горах, окружающих вулкан Тейде, мы снова нашли массу интересной растительности! Пока я фотографировал телевиком, моя супруга снимала на Фуджи в макрорежиме вот такие красивые произведения природы.
А это цветущие кактусы. В конце апреля на Тенерифе цветут очень много растений. Вот тут 35-мм объектив отработал идеально.
В макрорежиме камера подпускает очень близко и некоторые вещи на фотографиях выглядят просто фантастически.
Я практически никогда не снимаю в JPEG, но ради теста я установил на камере RAW + JPEG с эффектом пленки Velvia. Перед вами как раз jpeg с камеры.
И следующий кадр с красочным закатом тоже прямо из камеры. Единственное вмешательство — это кроп нижней части кадра и уменьшение размера для публикации в сети.
Съемка видео

Если в двух словах, то это не лучшее из того, что я видел из других беззеркальных камер. Во-первых, снять видео с рук мне просто не удалось — шевелёнка. Снимать со штатива на такую малютку в путешествии смешно. Но раз уж штатив оказался под рукой, сняли короткий клип со штатива, чтобы каждый сам смог сделать вывод. Пока из всех моих тестов наилучший результат выдаёт Panasonic Gh3. Причём, оставляя позади многие дорогие полнокадровые зеркалки.
Панорамы
И в заключение ещё одна интересная функция. Съёмка панорам. Функция очень удобная, просто выбираем режим панорамный съёмки и, нажимая на спуск, проводим камерой вдоль или поперёк сюжетной линии, которая должна превратиться в панораму. Вот такой получаем результат.
Нужно отметить, что панорама сшивается в камере и сохраняется только в формате Jpeg. Если осуществлять панорамную проводку аккуратно и не очень быстро — результат вполне вас устроит. Но смотря для чего.
При рассмотрении кадров на 100% понимаем, что такая фотография годится только для публикации в Интернете. Потеря деталей очень заметна. Особенно после того, когда сравниваешь результат сшитой панорамы из нескольких кадров, снятых со штатива. Тут фотографу необходимо определиться: если картинка для Фейсбука, то можно и в авторежиме снять, а вот если вы решите потом её напечатать и повесить на стену — снимайте со штатива несколько кадров и склеивайте. Это несложно, но по качеству несопоставимо!

В этом кадре заметно больше деталей, и по качеству склейки панорама получилась почти идеально.
Подведем итоги
Fujifilm X100S — маленькая, стильная беззеркалка с хорошей матрицей и светосильной линзой. Камера далеко не для каждого. Эта камера для вдумчивой съёмки, для определённых сюжетов и для продвинутых фотолюбителей.
Я не пожалел, что камера была со мной в поездке. Рассматривая фотографии уже дома, в Москве, я ещё раз для себя отметил, что беззеркалки очень удобны в поездках, выдают очень красивую картинку и во многих ситуациях уже смогут заменить тяжёлую зеркалку в путешествии.
Приложив к камере умелые руки, вы получите красивые и красочные фотографии, а вот нащёлкивать всё, что душе угодно, без зум-объектива вы не сможете. Плюс в этом или минус, решать вам.
35 мм/f2 — это серьёзная линза, с красивым рисунком, контрастная и резкая. Но, как я уже упоминал, ей очень не хватает бленды в штатной комплектации. В контровом свете приходится держать руку над объективом, чтобы уберечь кадры от засветки.
Матрица камеры действительно хороша — детализация и цветопередача на высоте! Управление камерой очень простое и логичное. Меню хорошо продумано, и в любой ситуации вы сможете быстро поменять настройки ISO, WB или установку творческого режима. Очень удобно наличие встроенного ND-фильтра. И, конечно, следует отметить отличное качество видоискателя.
В целом, испытанная камера Фуджи мне понравилась. Стало, кстати, интересно: что может выдать их флагман Xpro со сменной оптикой. Ведь именно отсутствие сменной оптики мне не позволило в поездке полностью заменить соткой зеркалку.

Fuji X100T vs. X100S vs. X100 — Fuji vs. Fuji
I had been putting this entire section off in anticipation of Fuji announcing some “Kaizen” action for the X100S. It would seem that just about everyone believed as I did that once the initial sales of X100T’s to early adopters died down, we’d see an X-E2 Firmware Version 3 style upgrade for the X100S. It just made sense, and surely the Firmware Version 2.0 that the original X100 received was a far more significant.
Sadly, Fujifilm Japan has confirmed the X100S will not be receiving any further upgrades to its firmware. This is a serious bummer, really disappointed a lot of Fuji fans, and spawned many articles and forum posts questioning how dedicated Fuji is to their own mantra.
I really hope this isn’t the case as “Kaizen” has been one of the Fujifilm brand’s most lauded characteristics. X100S owners who aren’t prepared to upgrade are the first Fuji owners who are justified in feeling snubbed, however I’ll curb my concern about a shift in ethos until at least one more camera that should get features from an update, but doesn’t.
Classic Chrome
If you want to make sure your Fuji pics look like as many other people’s as possible, the best thing you can do is shoot Classic Chrome these days. The gushing over this Film Simulation reached near intolerable levels for me, and actually made it less desirable to use. I don't dislike it, but it has a decidedly more recognizable, and vaguely Instagrammy/American Eagle look to it that almost seems late to the party. Fortunately the gushing seems to have waned a little more recently. I personally still lean towards PRO Neg. Hi when Classic Chrome would be a consideration. Perhaps this is a somewhat controversial stance on a Film Sim that’s so adored by many, but I don’t think it’s a feature worth choosing a camera for.
As a side note, the notion that this feature will not be seen on the X100S is a particularly tough pill to swallow after Zack Arias revealed that he had a “hacked” X100S with Classic Chrome on it. X100S owners lamented that the firmware all but exists, but would not be available to them. I said it on Twitter and I’ll say it hear, a factory-modified firmware that includes and additional Film Simulation mode ≠ a shippable firmware update.
UI
Now that I’ve had a good amount of time with the new UI of the X100T, going back to “old” is tough. The combination of the smaller screen and chunkier icons make the whole thing feel dated; a little like going back to a monitor that’s 1024 × 768.
It’s also great to be able to change things like ISO and Film Simulation mode while still being able to see the screen, and in general the interface gets out of your way more to let you focus on shooting.
With that written new user interface is a bit of a mixed bag for me. I really prefer the overall refresh in the “look and feel,” but find myself hunting the screen for things that used to be more quickly recognizable than they are now. Add to that the amount of new features, some of which are buried a little too deep for my liking and you end up with a UI that is less “discoverable” than it could be.
Here’s a list of grievances:
- The histogram is smaller. If I have the histogram visible, I want to see it. I’d also like some indication of where clipping will occur by way of a different-coloured Y-axis line at either end of the spectrum.
- The additional accent/warning colour is gone. Having something like the teleconverter icon in yellow was beneficial as it’s a feature that is far too easy to neglect to set properly. It’s a shame the X100 converters don’t have any contacts so user input isn’t required, but hiding it correct state doesn’t help.
- The distance indicator is too small. Set your aperture to ƒ/2 and you might have a hard time finding it. The contrast of the red line against light blue was far easier to pick out.
- No “Preview Effect” indicator. The only way to know if you are previewing a more subtle effect is to toggle it on and off. This makes having it set to a Fn button almost a requirement if you want to be able to switch between real life and Fuji colours quickly as the setting is a few layers deep in the menus, and strangely, can’t be set as an option in the Q Menu.
- The LCD interface still doesn’t rotate. I can’t figure this one out. On both the X-T1 and X100T, the entire UI rotates whilst peering through the EVF, but not on the LCD or OVF in the case of the X100T.
- The lonely Flash indicator icon. Unless I’ve missed a setting, it seems the Flash icon is the only on the left side of the screen, and it’s just sort of awkwardly there. Granted the converter icon was the only indicator on the right side of the screen on the X100S, but it’s of enough important that it warrants it’s own space,1 and at least it was centred.
There may be a few others, but otherwise the user interface is an improvement. I really ought to write about some of the individual improvements as well.
USB Charging
I’ve had this as a header in my review intending to be rather effusive about how nice this feature is to have, but to be honest, I haven’t even remembered to pack the cable in order to try this feature out. I’ve grown so accustom to having extra batteries with my Fuji cameras that I’m rarely left without a charge, and I’m perfectly happy to slap my dead battery in the smaller third-party charger with an integrated flip-out plug I keep permanently stuck in an outlet when I get home.
I could definitely see how for the commuter, being able to charge my camera the same way I do my phone via my laptop’s USB port would be nice, but in those cases I’m not using my camera so much that batteries die with regularity, and when I’m in a situation when I know I’ll be chewing through batteries, I typically have the foresight to bring a couple extras along. Another place I could see this being of use is in a USB-equipped car.
I still intend to see if I can make USB charging part of my photographic routine, but so far, it’s barely entered my mind.
Face Detection
I hadn’t made much use of this feature in previous bodies, but Fuji seem to have made improvements to the face detection algorithms built into the firmware, making it easier to capture a candid street portrait from the hip, as an example. I love it.
Multiple Auto ISO Banks
This is a big feature for me. Having to manually adjust the ISO settings when in auto was a bit of a pain. Now I can quickly go from a slower minimum shutter speed and lower ISO range when I’m able to steady myself to faster shutter speeds with a larger ISO range when I’m walking down the street grabbing shots or shooting from the hip. Love this feature.
While I can understand the motivations behind Fuji not updating the XI00S any further, the flies in the face of the reputation Fuji had created for itself as being the camera company that doesn't leave its users behind. Surely the release of firmware version 2.0 for the X100 was a much more significant update than adding things like an extra Film Simulation mode and interval shooting.
Kaizen aside, the X100T would still be a nice evolutionary upgrade over the hypothetical Firmware Version 3.0 X100S. Like I said in Fuji Views, it’s WiFi that I’d really miss if I had to switch back to X100S. If you’re anything like me though, you probably have an X-T1 as well that you could put your X100S’ SD card to transfer your shots to you iPhone.
