Xbox 360 Wired Headset troubleshooting

All services and games are active. See details

When you use your Xbox 360 Wired Headset, you experience one of the following problems:

  • You don't hear sound from the earpiece.
  • Other players can't hear you.
  • You hear an echo or noise during gameplay.

You may experience these problems if:

  • The connection port is dirty.
  • You incorrectly configured the Privacy or Family settings.
  • Your Xbox 360 Wired Headset is faulty.

Note You can only use the Xbox 360 Wired Headset with licensed Xbox 360 devices. You can't use the headset with any other device. The Xbox 360 console does not transmit game sounds or music through the Xbox 360 Wired Headset.

To resolve these problems, try the following solutions.

Examine and clean your Xbox hardware

To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Examine the headset, the cord, and the connector for visible defects.
  2. Make sure that no dirt or debris is on the headset connector. To clean the connector, use a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol.
  3. Verify that your Xbox 360 Controller operates correctly. Verify that you can use the controller to turn on and turn off the console.
  4. Firmly insert the Xbox 360 Wired Headset connector into the expansion port that's below the directional pad (D-pad) and the right stick on the controller.

Test the headset

To do this, record and listen to a new voice message:

  1. Press the Guide button  on the Xbox 360 Controller.
  2. Select Messages, and then press the A button .
  3. Select Create New, and then press the A button .
  4. Select Message, and then press the A button .
  5. Select a gamertag, and then press the A button .
  6. Select Add Voice, and then press the A button .
  7. Put on your Xbox 360 Wired Headset.
  8. Select the record (circle icon) button, and then press the A button  to start recording a message.
  9. Speak clearly into the microphone and record your voice for 5 to 15 seconds.
  10. Select the stop (square icon) button, and then press the A button  to stop recording.
  11. Select the play (right arrow) button, and then press the A button .
  12. Listen to your recording:
    • If you can hear the recorded message, your headset is operating correctly. If your headset still does not function correctly when you use it on Xbox Live, you may have to configure Family Settings. Go the next section.
    • If you can't hear the recorded message, your microphone may be muted, or the earpiece volume may be set too low. Verify that the controls are adjusted correctly.

Configure your Family Settings

Note If you set up a profile for a child on the console, Family Settings lets the owner of the parent profile control who can communicate with the child profile on Xbox Live. In Family Settings, you can enable communication in the child's profile. The default setting for users who are under 17 is Friends Only.

To configure Family Settings, follow these steps:

  1. Sign in with the Xbox Live account that you're having problems with.
  2. Select settings, and then select Privacy.
  3. Select Change Settings.
  4. Select Customize.
  5. Under Activity, select Voice and Text, and then choose either Everyone or Friends Only.

Make sure the volume is set correctly for the Xbox 360 Wired Headset

  • Increase the volume on the headset. To do this, rotate the volume control on the headset cable connector.
  • Make sure that the volume level is set correctly or that you've muted the volume in the Personal Settings area. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Press the Guide button  on the Xbox 360 Controller.
    2. Scroll right to Settings.
    3. Select Preferences.
    4. Select Voice.
    5. To turn off the Mute option, select Mute, and then press the A button .
    6. If not muted, increase the volume. Select the volume bar, and then press the D-pad or the left stick.

If these steps don't resolve the problem, you may need to replace your Xbox 360 Wired Headset.

If the other players can't hear you, first make sure that the mic switch is not set to Mute. The mic switch is located on the Xbox 360 headset connector.

Note See the game manual to determine whether you must press a button to communicate with other players during gameplay.

If the mic switch is not set to Mute, make sure that the volume level is set correctly and that you've not muted the volume in the Personal Settings area. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Press the Guide button  on the Xbox 360 Controller.
  2. Scroll right to Settings.
  3. Select Preferences.
  4. Select Voice.
  5. Make sure that the Mute option is not selected. To turn off the Mute option, select Mute, and then press the A button .
  6. Increase the volume. To do this, select the volume bar, and then press the D-pad  or the left stick .

If these steps don't resolve the problem, you may need to replace your Xbox 360 headset.

Note This echo effect originates from the person who is talking and not from the person who hears the echo. For example, if you hear an echo only when someone else talks, the problem concerns the headset connection of the person talking, not your own.

The following conditions may cause an echo or noise during gameplay:

  • The microphone detects ambient noises. This includes voice transmission that comes from the earpiece.
  • The headset plug isn't fully inserted into the controller.
  • You're using the Xbox 360 Wireless Controller, and the battery levels in the unit are low.

If you or other players hear an echo or other noise during gameplay, try one of the following:

  • Turn the volume down on your TV or stereo.
  • Disconnect the headset from the controller, and then reconnect.
  • Clean the plug on the headset cable with a clean cloth, and then reconnect the headset to the controller.
  • Test the headset by connecting it to a different controller, if possible.
  • If you're using an Xbox 360 Wireless Controller, replace the AA batteries or recharge the Xbox 360 rechargeable battery.

Set up and use the Wireless Bluetooth Headset with an Xbox 360 console

The easiest way to install the Xbox 360 Wireless Headset (with Bluetooth) software drivers is to connect to Xbox Live. If your console is connected to Xbox Live, skip to step 2.

If your console isn’t connected to Xbox Live, you can download the latest console software to your computer and install it on your Xbox 360 console. For the steps on how to do this, see How to get a new Xbox 360 update.

Before you can set up your headset, you may need to charge it. Here’s how:

  1. Plug the charging cable that’s included with the headset into a USB port on your console. There are two USB ports on the front of your console behind an oval door.
  2. Connect the other end of the charging cable to the headset’s power input. This is the smaller connector.
  3. Turn on your console.

The lights on the headset flash green while charging in Xbox mode, and flash blue while charging in Bluetooth mode. Once charging is complete, the light will stop flashing.

Notes

  • The headset isn’t functional when connected to the headset charging cable.
  • The headset charges in either Bluetooth or Xbox mode.

Some limited edition versions of the headset include a charging cradle. When the headset is in the charging cradle, the light on the cradle flashes during charging and stops flashing once the charging is complete.

The easiest way to connect your headset to your console by charging the headset, shown in step 2. If you’ve done this, unplug the charge cable from the headset and skip to step 4.

Another way is to wirelessly connect your headset to your console:

  1. Turn on your console.
  2. Move the mode switch to Xbox (Green) on your wireless headset.

  1. Press the power button on the headset for two seconds. The lights will flash green.

  1. After the headset plays the startup sound, press and hold the headset’s connect button for two seconds.

  1. Within 20 seconds of pressing the connect button, press and release connect button on your console.

The lights flash green three times once your headset is connected to your console. Your headset will now automatically connect to your console whenever you turn on your headset in Xbox mode.

Note If your headset doesn’t connect within 20 seconds, the lights resume flashing slowly. If this happens, repeat steps 4 and 5. The headset can take up to 10 seconds to connect to your console.

On an Xbox 360 S console, the headset is assigned a position on the ring of light around the console’s power button. Each connected controller is assigned to one of four positions, and each controller can have an associated headset.

Note On an Xbox 360 E console, you can determine the controller’s assignment by looking at the ring of light around the Guide button on the controller itself.

If a controller is assigned to position 1, then the wireless headset is also assigned to position 1. If another headset is already assigned to position 1, your headset is assigned to position 2.

If you want to change the position assigned to a headset, press the headset’s connect or power button to advance to the position you want. For example, to change a headset assigned to position 1 to position 3, press the connect or power button twice.

Note For help with this, see the “Assigning the wireless headset to another controller” video in the “Video tutorials” section at the bottom of this article.

Notes

  • You can connect up to four wireless headsets to a console at one time.
  • Make sure there is an available (unlit) section on the ring of light, before you connect your wireless headset.
  • If you want to connect multiple controllers and wireless headsets, connect a wireless headset first, then the corresponding controller.
  • A wireless headset can’t be associated with a controller that’s connected to a wired headset. To use a wireless headset instead, unplug the wired headset and then repeat the wireless connection steps in Step 3: Connect your wireless headset to your console.
  • A controller is not required for the headset to work with the console.
  • Your headset can connect wirelessly to only one console at a time. You can connect to a new console at any time, but your previous connection will be lost.

Before you use your wireless headset, you may need to swap out the ear gel for another size. Three ear gels in different sizes are included with your headset, so you can choose one that’s comfortable.

Insert an ear gel

  1. Remove the included ear gel by gently pulling it off the speaker.
  2. Select an ear gel, center it over the speaker, and then gently push the gel until it snaps into place. The surface of the speaker is slightly recessed below the lip of the ear gel.

Put on your headset

  1. Press the power button on the headset for 2 seconds to turn it on.
  2. Hold the headset in one hand with the speaker facing you.
  3. With your other hand, hold the ear loop and snap the loop into place at the base of the speaker. The ear loop is reversible, so you can wear the headset on your left or right ear.
  4. Fit the headset over either ear so that the ear loop hooks over your ear and the ear gel rests comfortably in your ear. If the headset isn’t comfortable, take off the headset and try using a different ear gel. The ear gel is designed to sit outside the ear canal.
  5. Once the headset is comfortably on, adjust the volume, and start using your headset.

For the best microphone performance, make sure the headset points towards your mouth and is positioned as shown.

Once you’ve completed the setup steps, you’re ready to use the headset with your console. Here’s how:

  1. Turn your console on.
  2. Press the power button on the headset.

The wireless headset works within 30 feet (9 meters) of the console. Objects between the controller and the console can reduce this range.

Notes

  • If you can’t hear someone when using in-game chat or private chat, see Troubleshoot problems with Xbox Live chat on Xbox 360.
  • When you are done using the headset, press and hold the power button to turn it off. Turning off your console doesn’t turn off the headset.
  • To adjust the volume, press the Volume Up or Volume Down button.
  • Press the Mute button to toggle mute on and off. You can only mute your headset in Xbox mode. Note To see a video tutorial that shows how to mute your headset, see the “Video tutorials” section at the bottom of this article.

  • Clean your headset with a dry cloth. Cleaning solutions may damage the headset.
  • Don’t allow the headset to get wet.

If the headset charging cable is connected to the headset and the battery fails to charge, the headset’s first two lights will flash in sequence (1, 1 and 2; 1, 1 and 2; and so on). Leave the headset connected for a while to see if the battery charges normally. If the lights on the headset continue to flash, contact Xbox Support using the Assistance information at the bottom of this page.

To answer a call

When you receive an incoming call, the headset plays an incoming-call sound, and the headset’s lights flash blue until you answer, reject, or tell the phone to ignore the call.

To answer an incoming call:

  • Press and release the Action button.
  • If the headset is in Xbox mode, switching to Bluetooth mode automatically answers the incoming call (without you pressing the Action button).
  • If the headset is turned off, turning it on will automatically answer an incoming call (without you pressing the Action button).

To reject an incoming call: Press and hold the Action button for two seconds.

To end a call: Press and release the Action button. (Switching to Xbox mode doesn’t end a call.)

If you get an incoming call during a call: Press the Action button to answer the incoming call and put the first call on hold. (This feature must be supported by your Bluetooth device and mobile carrier.)

While a call is on hold:

  • Press and release the Action button to hang up the active call.
  • Press and hold the Action button for two seconds to swap calls.

To make a call:

  1. Turn on your wireless headset.
  2. If your headset is connected to a Bluetooth device (and not already in a call), press and hold the Action button for two seconds.
  3. Use Bluetooth voice commands to make your call. For information about Bluetooth voice commands, refer to your Bluetooth device instructions (for example, your phone documentation).

Note The mute button on the wireless headset only works in Xbox mode. However, if you’re using the headset with a mobile phone, you can use the mute function on your phone.

Switch operating mode

You can switch the operating modes on your headset at any time. If you have a Bluetooth device that supports calling, you can switch from Xbox to Bluetooth mode to answer an incoming call on your headset (provided you have previously set up the Bluetooth device with your headset). If you switch from Bluetooth back to Xbox mode, your headset uses the same settings you had when you last used Xbox mode.

Your wireless headset has two low-battery charge indicators:

  • When 30 minutes of time remains: Lights flash about twice per minute until 5 minutes remain.
  • When 5 minutes of time remains: Lights flash continuously until the headset shuts off.

Mobile device connectivity problems vary by manufacturer. For help troubleshooting Bluetooth connectivity problems with a mobile device, see the product manual or the manufacturer’s website.

For help connecting your headset to a Windows Phone, see Pair my phone with a Bluetooth accessory.

People can’t hear you

If someone on a call can’t hear when you use the headset in Bluetooth mode:

  • Complete the setup steps to connect your headset with your Bluetooth device.
  • Make sure the mode switch on the headset is set to “Bluetooth.”
  • Make sure the microphone is pointed forward.
  • Make sure the Bluetooth mode on your Bluetooth device (for example, a phone) is on.

How to clear the list of Bluetooth devices from the headset

The headset stores pairing information for the last eight Bluetooth devices to which it was connected. If you want to clear the list, follow these steps:

  1. Turn on your headset.
  2. Move the mode switch to “Bluetooth” (the light on the headset will flash blue).
  3. Press and hold the Connect button for 10 seconds.
  4. Initially the lights will flash blue in a clockwise direction, and then after 10 seconds all four lights will flash together. The headset will also make two low-pitch sounds.
  5. Turn off the headset.
  6. To pair the headset again see “Step 3: Connect your wireless headset to your console,” above.

Set up and use your Xbox 360 Wireless Headset

This article describes how to set up and use your Xbox 360 Wireless Headset on your Xbox 360 console.

Note Your Xbox 360 Wireless Headset is for use exclusively with the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system. You can use a wireless headset with the original Xbox 360 console or the Xbox 360 S console.

You can chat with friends on Xbox Live using the Xbox 360 Wireless Headset.

Xbox Live offers a variety of ways to use chat:

  • Chat privately with friends
  • Chat during multiplayer games
  • Chat with everyone who attends your Xbox Live party
  • Chat using video (for help with video chat, see Video Kinect on Xbox 360)

Step 1: Charge your headset

Note Charge your wireless headset overnight before you use it the first time.

To charge with a USB charging cable

  1. Connect one end of the headset charging cable to your wireless headset.
  2. Plug the other end of the charging cable into a USB port on your Xbox 360 console. There are two USB ports on the front of your console behind an oval door.
  3. Turn on your console to charge your headset.

To charge with an AC power adapter

  1. Plug the AC power adapter into an electrical outlet.
  2. Connect the other end to the wireless headset.

Note If your headset is wirelessly connected to a console, connecting it to the AC power adapter will disconnect it from the console.

While the battery is charging, the lights on your wireless headset flash one at a time and then turn off. When your wireless headset is fully charged, all four lights blink in unison.

Notes

  • Before first-time use, it’s a good idea to charge your Xbox 360 Wireless Headset overnight to make sure the battery is fully charged. The four lights on the headset may not illuminate right away.
  • If your wireless headset is wirelessly connected to a console, connecting it to the AC power adapter will disconnect your wireless headset from your Xbox 360 console.
  • Your wireless headset is not functional when it is connected to the AC power adapter.
  • The four lights on the headset may not illuminate right away if you do not use your wireless headset for a long time.
  • Your wireless headset may become warm during charging.

If your headset battery is low, the headset beeps:

  • Two beeps mean 30 minutes of battery life remains.
  • Three beeps mean 5 minutes of battery life remains.

Step 2: Connect your wireless headset to a console

  1. Turn on your console and wireless headset.

  1. Press and then release the connect button on your console.

  1. Within 20 seconds, press and hold the connect button on the back of the wireless headset for 2 seconds.

The headset connects to your console and controller.

On an Xbox 360 S console, each connected controller is assigned to one of four positions on the ring of light. On an Xbox 360 E console, you can determine the controller’s position by looking at the ring of light around the Guide button  on the controller. Each controller can have an associated headset. In both of these images, a controller and wireless headset are connected as player 1 (position 1).

The Xbox 360 Wireless Headset works within 30 feet (9 meters) of your console.

To turn on or off: Press the power button on the headset.

Automatic shutdown:

  • The wireless headset powers off if it is not used for 2 minutes.
  • When you turn off your console, the wireless headset also turns off.

The mute and volume controls are on the front of the headset.

To mute: Press and hold the power button. To adjust the volume: Press the + or – button.

Warning Extended exposure to high volumes may result in temporary or permanent hearing loss.

Connect your headset to a different controller

If you have more than one controller connected to your console, you may want to change which controller your wireless headset is connected to. To do this, simply press the connect button on the wireless headset until the light matches the lit section of the Guide button  on your controller.

  • You can connect up to four wireless headsets to a console at one time.
  • If you want to connect multiple controllers and wireless headsets, connect a wireless headset first, and then the corresponding controller.
  • A wired headset takes precedence over a wireless headset.
  • A wireless headset can’t be associated with a controller that’s connected to a wired headset.
  • To use a wireless headset instead, unplug the wired headset and then repeat the wireless connection steps.

Below are some common problems and their solutions.

The headset won't charge or turn on.

Try the following:

  1. Fully charge the headset.
    • The lights on the microphone flash in sequence, 1-2-3-4, repeatedly when charging. When the headset is fully charged, all four lights flash at the same time.
    • Charge the headset overnight or for at least 6 hours to make sure that the battery is fully charged.
    • When you are charging with a power adapter, try using a different AC power adapter or power outlet than the one you are currently using.
    • When you are charging with the USB cable, try using a different USB port than the one you are currently using, or use a different USB cable than the one you are currently using.
  2. Make sure the headset is at room temperature. If the headset is too hot or too cold when you try to charge it, the first two lights on the microphone flash repeatedly in the sequence 1-1-2.
    1. Disconnect the wireless headset from the AC power adapter or the USB cable so that charging stops.
    2. Wait until the wireless headset returns to room temperature, and then plug it into an AC power adapter or a USB cable and see if it starts to charge.
There is unwanted noise or distortion.

Lower the volume on your TV and headset.

Voice chat does not work.

Try the following:

  • Turn off the mute function. Briefly press the power button. Two beeps confirm that you have changed the mute setting.
  • Verify your communication setup. See Xbox Live chat on the Xbox 360 console.
  • Reconnect the headset.

You can’t hear or communicate with someone in an online game or party.

See Troubleshoot problems with Xbox Live chat on Xbox 360.

The wireless headset frequently disconnects or only works when near the console.

Try the following:

  • Update the console software.
  • Move closer to the console.
  • Fully charge the headset.
  • Avoid placing the console or headset near large metal objects.
  • Remove clutter around your console.
  • Orient the console so the front faces your wireless headset.
  • Remove 2.4 GHz wireless devices in the area to see if they cause interference.
  • Reconnect the headset.
The headset can’t connect to a specific controller

Try the following:

  1. Unplug any wired headsets from the console.
  2. On the wireless headset, press the connect button. Lights on the wireless headset and on the controller are lit when they are connected. If the headset connects to the wrong position on the controller, press the connect button again to switch to the next available position.

If your headset still won’t connect, try this:

  1. Disconnect all other accessories from the console.
  2. Turn off all wireless controllers:
    1. Press and hold the Guide button  on the controller for 3 seconds.
    2. Confirm that you want to turn off only the controller.
  3. Press the power button on the wireless headset.
  4. Press the connect button on the console.
  5. Press the connect button on the wireless headset. The lights around the console power button will spin and blink once. The position that remains lit is the position of the wireless headset.
  6. If you want to test that the wireless headset will connect to the other positions, press the connect button again. The wireless headset connects to the next position.

If your wireless headset can’t connect to the console, the headset might be defective. You can order a replacement headset from Device Support (sign in with your Microsoft account). Product registration may be required.

Test the controllers

If a wireless headset can connect to the console when no controllers are connected to the console, there is a problem with one of the controllers. To identify which controller is causing the problem, follow these steps:

  1. If you are using a wireless controller, press the Guide button  to turn on the controller. If you are using a wired controller, connect the controller to the first position on the console.

Note If you are using a wired controller, connect the controller to the first position on the console.

  2. Press the connect button on the controller.
  3. On the wireless headset, press the connect button until the lit section on the controller Guide button  matches the lit number on the wireless headset. If this is successful, go to the next step. If it is not, the controller might be defective. Try another controller.
  4. Connect a second controller to the second position on the console. Leave the first controller connected to the first position on the console.
  5. On the wireless headset, press the connect button until the lit number on the wireless headset matches the lit position on the second controller Guide button .

If this procedure is successful, repeat these steps for each additional controller. You can connect up to four controllers.

If you determine that a controller is defective, you can order a replacement controller from Device Support (sign in with your Microsoft account). Product registration may be required.
