Once you have confirmed that your computer meets the minimum system requirements, you are ready to install the software. Close all other programs, then double click on the installation file in the EV3 Software application folder. Installation will now begin.

There are five robots which you can build straight out of the box – the building instructions along with accompanying programs are available in the EV3 Software. In addition there are a further 12 fan-made bonus robots that can be accessed via the EV3 Software Lobby or via the website – all 12 can be built using the elements from the LEGO® MINDSTORMS® EV3 (31313) set.

Yes. We have continued and improved the On-Brick Programming App with the LEGO® MINDSTORMS® EV3 Brick. You can easily program basic tasks on the EV3 Brick. All of the EV3 Brick Programs can be uploaded into the LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3 Home Edition Software for continued and advanced programming.

Yes. For most users, the tool is called MyBlocks and is already available inside the standard EV3 Software. For people creating their own hardware, a Software developer kit will be made available.

No. It is not possible to program your EV3 Brick with the NXT Software.

There is a pdf User Guide which gives a short introduction to the EV3 Brick Programming App on the EV3 Brick and describes how to make a program. For EV3 Software Programming, there are two Quick Start videos in the Lobby of the Software which will introduce you to programming.

Yes. You can program your NXT Intelligent Brick using the new LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3 Home Edition Software. However, not all Software features are supported by the NXT Intelligent Brick.

Yes and No. The free EV3 Programmer App – available on the App Store and from Google Play – allows you to program your robots from your tablet via Bluetooth. Compared to the programming software for PCs and Macs, the app is more simple to use and does not include some of the more advanced programming features such as data blocks and calculations. We recommend the EV3 Programmer App for everyone who is new to LEGO MINDSTORMS or who prefers to be able to program their robot even if they are not close to a stationary PC or Mac. For the complete EV3 software package you have to install the LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3 software to a PC or Mac. This version of the software is currently not available for tablets.

Besides the EV3 Software, you can also use LabVIEW and RobotC. EV3 Software is an open-source platform, and, therefore, we anticipate the MINDSTORMS community to develop additional languages such as JAVA.

There are many new features and improvements from the NXT Software to the EV3 Software. Some of the more noticeable ones are: Lobby:

  • New full screen Lobby to navigate through the content provided including access to the project files for the five EV3 Hero Robots, TRACK3R, SPIK3R, R3PTAR, GRIPP3R and EV3RSTORM, plus direct links to the 12 Fan-made Bonus Robots.
Content Editor:
  • Content is editable directly inside the software, enabling customization of existing projects or creation of new ones from scratch.
Tighter integration between the EV3 Brick and the programming environment:
  • The hardware page enables monitoring of the status and values measured by all the hardware elements.
  • Hardware elements are automatically recognized thanks to Auto ID.
  • Bluetooth configuration is facilitated by the USB-to-Bluetooth features.
Debugging features are now part of the programming environment:
  • Execution highlight
  • Programming blocks will display a warning symbol if expected hardware by the programming block is different from the detected hardware by Auto ID.
  • Probes enable seeing the values go through the data wires.
New programming blocks’ possibilities:
  • Simple strip programming by snapping blocks together (no need to use the beam anymore).
  • Block parameters are configured directly on blocks.
  • Read the program sequence directly on blocks.
  • Improved sequence wires facilitate showing the structure of the program and create parallel execution.
  • “Wait for change” has been added to easily create robots that behave according to change in the environment, as opposed to waiting for the threshold, which only works by comparing measured values.

  • Arrays integrated in the standard blocks.
  • Loop Interruption is now possible, enabling the creation of advanced state control mechanisms.

The Content Editor enables you to edit, adapt, and customize projects — or create your own from scratch. You can use the Content Editor to customize your projects by inserting text, images, videos, and sound.

The Content Editor will support the following file formats, which does not include .AVI: Picture: JPG, PNG Video: MP4, ASF, WMV, MOV

Sound: MP3, WMA

Under Help at the top menu bar of the EV3 Software, you can enable the EV3 Software to automatically check for updates. By clicking Check for Software Updates, a check mark will appear and the EV3 Software will regularly check for updates. (This requires an Internet connection.) If a relevant update is available, you will be notified by the EV3 Software. If you wish to install the EV3 Software update, you will be taken to LEGO.com/mindstorms where you can download the update file. Once downloaded, you can install the update.

The Bluetooth allows for communication to the EV3 software or for EV3 brick-to-brick communication. You also use Bluetooth to connect your tablet to your robot when using the EV3 Programmer App and the EV3 Commander App.

USB connection is faster, and some PCs do not have Bluetooth.

No. A daisy chain uses the USB cable to connect EV3 Bricks.

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth serve different purposes. Bluetooth is for close-range communication between two devices. Wi-Fi is for network communication on a wider range, requires a Wi-Fi access point–router, and will consume more battery power than Bluetooth.

The Bluetooth communication on the EV3 Brick will support the same protocol that iOS devices use, e.g., you can communicate with iPod, iPhone and iPad. (That is not possible in the NXT Brick).

The Wi-Fi feature can be used for communication from the EV3 Brick to the EV3 Software. A Wi-Fi dongle must be connected to the USB host of the EV3 Intelligent Brick. (A Wi-Fi dongle is not included with the product)

Yes. The NETGEAR N150 Wireless Adapter (WNA1100) is the recommended Wi-Fi dongles for use with the EV3 Intelligent Brick.

The USB connection is faster. The battery will last longer if the Wi-Fi is turned off.

  • With the EV3 Color Sensor you have Reflected Light mode which removes background light.
  • The EV3 sensors can return new values 1000 times/sec where the NXT sensors only return new values 333 times/sec

The EV3 Large Motor specifications are the same as on NXT; however, the build interface is optimized for faster and more complex building possibilities. The Medium Interactive Servo Motor is a completely new motor, providing new possibilities.

Technically, yes, but the designs of the LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3 Large Motors and the NXT Interactive Servo Motors are different. The LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3 Large Motors allows for a better building experience.

Yes. You can use both the Large Interactive Servo Motors and the Medium Interactive Servo Motor with the Intelligent NXT Brick.
