Kids smart watch

Top 10 Kids SmartWatches 2018

When I was younger, my parents bought me my first watch. It was an analogue Timex piece with a fabric strap. Its only superpower was its ability to tick away for four whole years before the battery needed replacing. I loved that watch. I was amazed that I could tell the time just by looking at my wrist. I was in love with something that was, to me, high-tech.

Today’s kids have it a whole lot better though. Merely telling the time is the least that smartwatches can do. Kids can play games on their watch now, or sync their watch with their smartphone so they never miss that text from mum or dad telling them to come home because their tea is nearly ready. You can even set alarms and create to-do lists.

It goes without saying then that kids these days have it good. If you are thinking about buying your kid a smartwatch, be it for their birthday or as a special treat, we’ve compiled a list of the top 10 kids smartwatches in 2018 for you to consider.

So without further ado, let’s begin.   FiLIP claims to be the world’s first smart locator and phone for kids. It is in fact a smartwatch offering all the features of the Apple Watch but with the ruggedness of a children’s toy. It can make and receive voice calls from up to 5 pre-set contacts and it can send one-way text messages. It also packs in GPS, GSM and Wi-Fi – this is actually the best feature set of all, because it allows parents to track their children indoors and outdoors. As a phone watch, the FiLIP is an excellent choice. It offers voice calling through the FiLIP app, allowing your child to call you whenever they like. You can also call your child through your smartphone. You can setup five phone numbers on the FiLIP, so should your child not be able to reach you, they’ll have four other people to call in an emergency. The FiLIP phone watch has a red SOS button on its side, which when pressed triggers a call to the primary account holder. If there’s no answer, the FiLIP calls each of the five contacts in sequence.

Compatible with iPhone and Android devices, the FiLIP has an ‘Intelligent Emergency’ feature that lets your child press a red button located on the side of the watch to call the primary account holder (the parent). If that call fails, then the watch will cycle through its emergency contacts until somebody does answer. Pressing the red button also immediately activates tracking features, letting the parent know exactly where their child is. You can also set ‘safe zones’ through GPS – if your child strays beyond a safe zone, you will be alerted.

Overall, this is a fantastic smartwatch for safety-conscious parents.   If you have a hard time getting your hands on a FiLIP, or it’s too expensive, then the Caref GPS Tracking Watch is the next best thing. This is a waterproof and shockproof smartwatch with accurate GPS and voice and text functionality. The only downside is it’s a US-only device, because you need to also take out one of Caref’s monthly data plans to benefit from the text and voice functionality. But still, this is a very neat device.

Providing you are in the US, then, the Caref GPS smartwatch can hooked up with an iPhone or Android smartphone. You can set up priority contacts so that your child can call you directly from their watch. Your child will be able to send and receive calls and there’s a physical SOS button on the side that sends a text message to the priority contact. In addition, you can set up GPS safe zones and you will receive a text message alert if your child strays beyond a set boundary.

In addition, the Caref watch records location history every 10 minutes. So if your child - heaven forbid - goes missing, you can see exactly where they have been.   The VTech Kidizoom Plus is a smartwatch for younger children. Some may question the need for a child as young as five to have a smartwatch, however the Kidizoom is a fun device that will keep younger children occupied. This smartwatch does not connect to a phone so it’s a standalone device. VTech recommend it for children aged 5-12 years, however we can’t really see any child over the age of 9 (or beyond primary school) rocking one of these.

The Kidizoom Plus can take photos and videos and there are lots of digital and analogue watch faces to choose from. Like the best toys, this one offers a neat learning experience with a feature called ‘Fun Time Master’ which helps children learn to tell the time. Your child can also record their own voice and use alarm clock, timer and stop watch functions.

The Kidizoom SmartWatch Plus is available in three main colours - Cerise, Green and Blue. The device itself is chunky so there is little risk of it being a choking hazard and the strap has been designed to be childproof. Overall, this is a great smartwatch for younger children.   If you are looking for a smartwatch that’s a little more fun than the FiLIP and Caref options listed above but with the same GPS tracking features, the AmbyGear Smartwatch should be a serious contender for your money. This is arguably the most rugged watch on this list with a soft silicone shell covering the whole watch case.

Features including messaging, a smart calendar, safe zones, and parental controls including a unique system where you can enable new apps as your child gets older, accurate location tracking through GPS and 3G connectivity and smart activity and fitness tracking. Like all GPS watches for kids, you can set up geo-fences and get alerts whenever your child enters a geo-fence or leaves it. It tracks your child through GPS and 3G, the former enabled by embedded technology within the watch. So, there is a monthly service fee. In the US, that fee is $9 per month for a year, or $16.90 for a 2-year contract plan.

Overall, this is one of the best kid’s smartwatches on the market – and certainly one of the most rugged. If your child is very active, then we recommend this watch.

The dokiWatch claims to be the first-ever smartwatch for kids to feature video calling; we know that not to be the case, with several kids smartwatches having this feature, however there’s no denying that this smartwatch offers it all. It’s only available for pre-order for now, however the Kickstarter campaign driving it to market was a resounding success.

Feature include voice calling, location tracking, SOS alerts, parental control, fitness tracking, electronic pet functionality (remember Tamagotchi’s?) and lots of customisation options for kids to get stuck in to. First and foremost, this smartwatch has been designed to keep your child safer and for this reason the key selling points are GPS tracking and SOS alerts, in a similar vein to the FiLIP and Caref smartwatches listed above. The dokiWatch is nicer looking than these watches though and the screen and operating system seem to be slicker.

It uses a combination of GPS, GSM and Wi-Fi technology to ensure that you can track your kid indoors and outdoors. The doki app also lets you set AlertAreas, which are effectively safe zones. Parents will get an alert every time their child enters or leaves a set area.

Orbo Kids Smartwatch

Best for: Kids aged 3 to 8 years old.

The Orbo Kids Smartwatch introduces your child to the basics of timekeeping, and the wonderful world of touch. Through a touchscreen interface, the Orbo displays both digital and analogue clock faces with alarm and stopwatch functions. The in-built apps help teach your children how to tell the time, and there are a variety of interactive activities and built-in games to provide hours of endless fun.

Available in blue and pink, the Orbo is made from durable plastic with a soft, silicone band and in-between charges it should last for around 8 hours. Perhaps the coolest feature of this kid’s smartwatch is the camera, which rotates and lets kid’s take photographs and edit them with neat effects.

HereO

Best for: Kids aged 3 to 12 years old who would like a slimline watch.

The hereO markets itself as the “world’s smallest real-time cellular-connected GPS tracking device.” It boasts GSM, GPS and WiFi connectivity, and measures 112-136mm, while weighing a paltry 40g. What does this mean? Simply that the heroO is an extremely sleek kid’s smartwatch. It’s also splash proof and dustproof, with a durable plastic casing and one of the softest silicone bands on the market. So, it looks great.

It’s packed with features too, although the hereO is more for parent’s than the children themselves. It lets you track the whereabouts of your child through GPS on your smartphone, and you can set Safe-Zones so that you are alerted when your child leaves the area.

LG GizmoPal 2

Best for: Children aged 4 and over wanting easy controls.

The LG GizmoPal 2 is, in our opinion, one of the best-looking kid’s smartwatches on the market today. Its sleek black screen, soft silicone band and silver case look the part, and it also gets LED status indicators which clearly display battery status, call status and signal strength.

Coming in blue and pink, the LG GizmoPal 2 offers real-time location tracking and two-way calling, with the ability for you to add up to four authorised telephone numbers so that your child can call you if they need help. All of this is managed through the GizmoHub App, which is free to download for GizmoPal 2 customers, and the watch itself is incredibly easy to use even for young children, thanks to one-button controls.

The LG GizmoPal 2 is the best Verizon watch for kids, if you are looking for a smartwatch that offers call functionality and GPS functionality. It offers a 9-day battery life and lets you set GPS boundaries and notifications. Through Verizon, the LG GizmoPal 2 is available on a 2-year contract. This includes all the minutes your child needs for 2-way voice calling. If this Verizon watch for kids isn’t what you are looking for, Verizon also have the excellent LG GizmoGadget smartwatch which has a 1.3” touchscreen, making it more suitable for older kids. The GizmoGadget is available in blue and red.

LINE Kid’s Watch

Best for: Children aged 3+, parents accurate tracking.

LINE Kid’s Watch’, is one of the most capable kid’s as far as communication is concerned. It boasts U-blox’ high performance UBX-G7020 multi-GNSS chip, which supports GPS, and U-blox’ SARA-U270 UMTS/HSPA module which offers high-speed mobile connectivity. In the real world (and forgetting all those letters and numbers and chipsets), what this means is that the LINE Kid’s Watch offers incredibly accurate tracking features for parents and allows children to stay in contact with their parents from anywhere.

The watch also runs KIWI Plus’ own IOT platform. This Android-based operating system boasts one-touch calling and easy to access real-time location tracking. One of the neatest features is that two or more of these watches can also be hooked up with each other so that friends can stay in touch and never get lost. In addition to this, you can send text messages from the watch through voice input (as opposed to having to type on a small touchscreen), and an emergency notification can be sent directly to a parent’s smartphone or tablet with a single touch. So should a child find themselves in some form of danger, the parent can be alerted easily, and thanks to accurate location tracking the parent will also know exactly where their child is.

In terms of design and how the LINE smartwatch looks the watch appears to have an aluminium case and a glass screen. The strap appears to be made from silicone and there will be three colours at launch: Blue, white and pink. The watch is actually fairly stylish overall, with its rounded case setting it apart from the crowd.

Kurio Watch

Best for: Kids aged 3 to 10 years old wanting games and apps with an entertainment centre.

The Kurio Watch is a wearable device that takes a different tact to the Octopus smartwatch. Whereas the Octopus smartwatch is an educational wearable device, the Kurio Watch is more of an entertainment-based wearable. For example, the Kurio Watch has a customisable interface and a video recorder and a camera, in addition to 20 preinstalled mini-games and apps for kids to sink their teeth into.

Those preloaded games are the biggest draw of the Kurio Watch. They consist of a variety of single and multiplayer games that include motion, thanks to Kurio’s in-built accelerometer, and they are designed to keep kids occupied. The Kurio also comes preloaded with an alarm, calendar and calculator and it is an activity tracker. So like all the best smartwatches designed for kids, with the Kurio parents can keep tabs on their child’s physical activity and step up their exercise regime if needed.

The watch also has an I.C.E (In Case of Emergency) application which allows parents to enter their child’s medical information, such as their blood type, in case of emergencies. The thought process behind such a feature is that should a child be injured not in the company of their parent, then a medical crew can treat the child immediately without having to wait for the parent. This feature has the potential to save lives, so it’s nice to see it preinstalled on the Kurio Watch. In addition to this, the Kurio Watch can connect with other devices through Bluetooth, so family members can send messages to each other.

In terms of design, the Kurio Watch is built for longevity. We wouldn’t call it ‘fashion-forward’ (as Kurio have done), although it looks pretty sweet. It has smooth rounded edges and an adjustable soft silicone strap. The front of the watch is dominated by a touchscreen display and the watch has 128MB of on-board storage for storing photos. However, this can be expanded with a microSD card.

4 Best Smartwatches For Kids in 2019 [Buying Guide] – Gear Hungry

Telling the time is a valuable life skill that anyone over the age of 13 might take for granted. With our smartphones telling the time for us, watches are becoming less of a necessity, but smart watches can combine time-telling with a host of different apps to make them incredibly useful in day-to-day life. Great for adults, yeah, but perhaps even more important for kids who are just entering the realm of learning about tech’s effect on everyday life. If you are planning to encourage your child into exploring the wide and wonderful world of technology before they even start school then a smartwatch is the perfect place to start. Here’s our collection of the 4 best smartwatches for kids.

The Best Smartwatches For Kids

The Vtech smartwatch is awesome, affordable and simple to use while still durable enough to withstand even the wildest child. To match your child, check out our sports watches guide and find the perfect one for you!

This junior-sized version of an adult Garmin smart watch is a fantastic device that is completely tailored for the needs of a child. It has a sleek design that is not too big on their wrist and has a stretchable band to fit all sizes, yet is also robust enough to be fully kid-proof to prevent any tears.

The smartwatch comes with a free parental-control app so you can check up on your child’s progress and establish chores and rewards for your peace of mind (and to keep the house shining all year-round). By completing chores that display on the in-app interface, you will bring a level of interactivity to typically dull and laborious household activities. Iof you make it fun, your kids will be itching to fold the clothes, clean the floors, and take the garbage out.

On the kid side of things, there are plenty of features to keep them occupied and discover something new every day including a pedometer and both fun and educational mobile adventures as well as a stopwatch for when they want to time how fast they can run up and down the stairs. There is also a sleep tracker to ensure they are getting enough rest for their brains to properly develop and help them transform into little geniuses.

The Garmin vivofit JR is a stylish and easy-to-wear product that is popular with pre-teens. The display quality could be better, but how likely is it that your kid will care? But it’s you that will be splashing out $60 on this watch, so whether you think it’s an issue or not is up to you.

If your child spends most of their time explaining to you reasons why the Empire Did Nothing Wrong, then they might enjoy keeping time alongside the galaxy’s greatest army (ha!) Great for Star Wars fans, it is easy enough to understand for children as young as 5 while still having enough challenging games to keep it interesting.

VTech Star Wars First Order Stormtrooper Smartwatch is fitted with a timer, stopwatch and good quality camera that can be enhanced with over 20 Star Wars effects to make it much more than just a watch. Its display can be customized with 30 different digital and analog faces to get children more comfortable with learning to tell the time. Also included are lightsaber, droid and spaceship sound effects, a calculator and calendar.

While not as comprehensive as other watches, it is a cool little gimmick gadget that will capture the imagination of the most ardent Star Wars fans. The watch is splash-proof but won’t be able to cope with full submergence, so just make sure your child doesn’t crashland into a Dagobah swamp to ensure that this smart watch remains a trusted and fine companion when exploring the galaxy. Our handy guide to the best watches for boys features more great products like this.

Bright enough to stand out in a crowd but still stylish enough not to look too garish on your kid’s wrist, this VTech smart watch for kids is a great gift for younger children with its eye-catching design and easy-to-use apps and games. It is fitted with an camera that has a high enough quality for your kid to take photos and videos without clogging up the internal memory as well as containing 4 exciting learning games (and more can be downloaded from Vtech’s Learning Lodge) that will entertain them while teaching them at the same time.

A great addition to the world of kids smart watches, VTech’s Kidizoom is an excellent alternative for when the Apple watch for kids might seem a bit too complex right now. It can be used to teach your kid both digital and analog time and lets them record their voice and change it with 5 wacky effects. Splash but not water resistant, make sure you don’t let your kid jump in the bath with it, and this watch should last them until they’ve graduated to more complicated tech. Find more eye-catching designs, this time for yourself, in our Tissot watches review.

Kids are a little different to adults when it comes to what you want to look for when buying them a smartwatch so you’ll need to take a step back into the past and bring out your inner child when thinking what they are going to enjoy. They probably don’t care about heart rate, but they probably do care about how many games they can play.

Functionality of a Smartwatch

A smartwatch needs to be able to tell the time, but that isn’t everything. These watches need to be a little more on the intelligent side if your kid is going to enjoy it. While its primary function is to teach them how to read a clock - digital or analog - this is simple enough, so finding something that can help them learn on-the-go through games, quizzes and other activities will make them much more satisfied.

The wide variety of functions available on these smartwatches can help you make this decision. If your child is still learning their numbers, adding, subtracting or more complicated equations, then finding a watch with a calculator should be high on your priorities. If they are on the older side and want to play cool, unique games on their watches, then choosing something with a little more pizazz will ensure that that don’t get bored of it too quickly.

Benefits of Giving Your Child a Smart Watch

Giving your child a smart watch demonstrates that you trust them to look after a considerably expensive piece of technology. This should inspire some responsibility in them and hopefully teach them how to look after their belongings. Just in case they are still careless, many of these watches come with kid-proof designs to help them withstand the natural rough and tumble that is unavoidable in childhood.

A smart watch for boys (or girls) can also help teach them in their spare time (often without them realising) through games and activities that come pre-installed on the device. This saves you time downloading software and gives them the opportunity to dive straight in. With exciting games that get the brain working, they will get more benefits from the smart watch than you might predict.

Precautions To Take When Using a Kid's Smartwatch

It is a big thing to give your kid a smart watch and so there are some precautions you will have to take. If you are concerned with where they are, then consider finding a kids GPS watch or kids tracker to help keep tabs on them for the first few times they are out with friends. Some watches come with parental controls, so you can decide what they can and cannot do on their watch.

These features are great for younger children who might fully understand the capabilities of their smart watches. While you don’t want to be too overbearing, there is nothing wrong with being too cautious.

Smartwatch for Kids FAQ

If you have any extra questions about smartwatches for kids, check out our FAQ section below to get an idea of some of the more common concerns from parents or older relatives when they are thinking about buying a kids’ smart watch.

Q: Will my child be able to easily use a kid's smartwatch?

A: Children’s smart watches have been designed to accommodate the child’s capabilities. They comes with bright colours to catch their attention and have easy-to-read displays which will teach them to recognize numbers quickly. When not displaying the time, these watches also show the additional applications that can be found on the watch which are easily accessible at the tap of a screen.

These watches also do not want to overwhelm the child with too many features. When considering what kids like to do one other devices like tablets and smartphones, smartwatch designers have integrated these same functions onto the watch. The end result is that the child can play games or take pictures with their own device instead of getting their sticky hands all over yours.

Q: How much battery life does a smartwatch for kids have?

A: A typical smartwatch will have around 1 - 2 days worth of charge. There are some exceptions such as the Garmin featured above, however, this normally depends on how much use the watch is subjected to.

Like our smartphones, the more you use the smartwatch, the quicker the battery will drain. If your child is purely using it to check the time and maybe study the pedometer, then you can expect a little over two-days worth of battery life. We all know how unlikely that is, though. Kids love exploring all of the features tech has to offer, so do not be surprised if they complain that their watch is running low on battery before the end of the day.

To combat this, you need to teach them the importance of charging. They won’t have devices of their own yet, so charging might be a foreign concept. If you remind them to charge their watch every night, they shouldn’t run into any problems and enjoy it throughout the day, until the next charge comes around.

Our Top Pick

Without a doubt, our top pick for the best smart watch for kids is the VTech Kidizoom DX2. It offers excellent functionality, great value for money and is suitable for a wide range of ages. This makes it a great starter smart watch as well as a decent finisher before graduating to more advanced devices.

The DX2 is more advanced than other VTech smart watches and seems to have everything you need from a watch by blending traditional technology with more recent advancements to provide the best kids smart watch experience possible. Compare this with other smart watches for kids and you will more than likely come to the same conclusion.

It is educational, entertaining and comes without any of the gimmicks that might be apparent in other products. For these reasons, the VTech Kidizoom DX2 is our top pick for children’s smart watches.

10 Best Kids Smart Watches in 2019

Technology has reached a new level. Now you can help control your child with the help of smartwatches. Of course, though, your child has to be willing to wear one. The question arises:

What smart watches will satisfy both the parent and the child?

When choosing a watch you need to consider the features. For example, does it have GPS? What is the design like? Is it important to have games? Do you want to track how active your child is? Are you wanting to buy one for a teenager?

Children in the 21st century are now very used to having technology around them and are more than able to use such gadgets.

This article presents best kids smart watch in 2019. For each product, we will discuss all the relevant features that will make it easy to make the best decision.

Let’s start.

The Best Smartwatches for Kids

1. DUIWOIM – Most Advanced GPS

Looking for a kid’s smart watch with precise location positioning?

Then DUIWOIM watches are the best choice.

Why?

Many users of this watch note the excellent location accuracy when worn by the child. This is achieved through the use of three methods: GPS, WiFi and LBS. This triple positioning system allows you to continuously receive data on changes in geolocation. Note that location accuracy will only work with a SIM card.

Let’s take a look at the design.

The design of the watch can be called minimalistic. A square case that has a charging connector on the side and an SOS button. The screen is large and convenient to use, the front camera is located below. There are two colors: blue and pink. Thus allowing you to choose the color of the smart watch for boys, and for girls.

The watch is waterproof to IP67. This means that the watch is protected from dust and you can stay under water for up to 1 meter for 30 minutes. You can read more about this here.

What about communication?

The child can call, send texts or voice messages. In order for DUIWOOIM to become a kid’s smart watch phone, you need to buy a GSM network sim-card. Then place the SIM card in the back of the watch. Then all that remains is to follow the instructions to configure it.

What useuful features does it have?

There is a pedometer and a fitness tracker. There is also a restriction of use feature. These applications are useful to parents, as you can watch the activity of your child. But there is little entertainment. This smart watch cannot be called a toy. There is only one game that focusses on developing logic and the child will likely not want to play it for a long time.

Consider this before purchasing.

There is another drawback. The clock supports only 24hour time format.

If you take into account these facts, then DUIWOIM smart watch is a great choice if you want to have peace of mind about your child’s whereabouts. It will not distract them in the classroom and you can get the necessary information. If something bad were to happen, you will be immediately informed.

2. Xiaomi Amazfit Bip – Best for Teens or Stylish Kids

If you can trust your child with a more serious gadget, or if they are slightly older, then Amazfit Bip smartwatch for teenager from the Huami brand, which was created by the famous Chinese company Xiaomi, would be an excellent choice.

In appearance, Amazfit Bip looks solid and resembles Apple Watch for kids. Such watches will fit in small pockets as it is small and neat. Weight with a strap is only 1.1oz. There are 4 colors: black, white, black with orange edging and dark green.

The watch case is made completely of plastic, and the display is covered with a protective Corning Gorilla Glass 3 glass with an oleophobic coating and a 2.5D effect. The finger slides on the glass easily, the prints are not very noticeable and can be easily removed.

The case itself is strong and well assembled. There is protection against splashes according to IP68. That is, you can take a shower and wash your hands. But a long swim or going to the sauna with it on is not advised.

What about geolocation?

Since this device is a personal device, only the user has access to all functions that work with GPS. Their smartphone must be synchronized with the device.

This device does not allow parents to track the user via their smartphones. All the same, these watches are designed for teenagers and they will not be grateful to you if you track them.

A feature of the watch is the presence of dual positioning. It uses GPS and GLONASS . This makes location determination accurate. The clock periodically synchronizes with the satellite.

You can track your distance and speed on the device as well as their route. In the settings you can turn on the vibration notification when reaching certain distances.

In addition, the watch has a barometer and altimeter, which allow you to track ascents and descents while running and cycling.

What else can Amazfit Bip do?

The watch is synchronized with your smartphone. It will display notifications about upcoming events for example, or from a range of instant messaging services, mail and other applications. Unfortunately, you cannot answer using a smartwatch, but on an incoming call you can see the name of the contact, reject the call or ignore it.

But the main advantage of the watch is the time it can last without recharging. Even the best smartwatch for adults work no more than a week.

Amazfit Bip beats all records, because it lasts for 30-45 days on a single full charge.

It’s hard to believe, but true. On average, the charge of the clock drops by 3% per day, with a high number of notifications the hours are discharged to 5% per day.

Full charging time takes almost 3 hours. The battery is not removable and its capacity is 190 mAh.

When the backlight is turned on, display flaws immediately strike the eye – low contrast and minimal viewing angles, but considering the price and functionality of the watch, this is not a critical drawback.

All the same, videos and photos don’t look good on the display. In everyday life and in training, the quality of the display is enough and even its relatively small size does not become a problem.

To sum up, Amazfit Bip is a pretty good, functional smart watch with good battery life. They are well-assembled, easy to use and equipped with a heart rate monitor, which sports fans will appreciate.

I think Amazfit Bip is a smartwatch for 12 years old and older. Given the cost and functionality, it is still a great gift. This is just a convenient watch for every day that does not need to be put on charge even once a week.

The elastic silicone bracelet is convenient even for the child’s wrist, and the convenient clasp securely fixes the smartwatch in place. The watch is made in two standard versions: blue and pink.

Other useful features for the child.

There is an alarm clock, timer and stopwatch. In addition, children can use the calendar and calculator to cope with simple calculations. It is also possible to customize the theme of the watch screen from 55 available layouts.

Although I believe that Kidizoom could actually be first on the best kids smartwatch list, there is actually no GPS tracker and the no ability to use a SIM card so the child cannot contact the parents.

If this is not your central concern when purchasing though then this watch will be a good purchase. It’s easy to set up and use, and the available functions work perfectly. It is worth considering this model as a toy for a child or a gadget that will prepare the child for more advanced technologies in the future.

5. Garmin – Best Activity Tracker For Your Child

Garmin have a huge range of smart watches and fitness bracelets, but they are not only for adults, but there are also several models of fitness trackers for children. They were designed to encourage children to be active and carry out tasks from their parents in an interesting, playful way.

The first generation of such a gadget Garmin Vivofit Jr was released in 2016, and at the end of 2017, the manufacturer decided to update this series by introducing Vivofit Jr. 2 What changed?

Let’s start with the design.

Thanks to Garmin’s collaboration with Disney, Marvel and LucasFilms, there are now a number of signature themes: Minnie Mouse, Captain America from the Marvel comics and the BB-8 droid from Star Wars and other characters known to your child, which they should like.

The new version has received several new features and updates, including an active color screen.

The process of setting up the gadget is very simple, especially if you already have a Garmin Connect account. In this case, the entire setup process will take no more than 10 minutes.

For children, everything is simple. By default, the screen displays the time. By pressing the button below the screen, the date is displayed, with each next click, the number of steps completed, the minutes of activity, the number of completed tasks, coins earned, and stars earned per day are displayed.

What is offered to parents?

Parents can view all indicators of the child’s activity in the application. Such as the number of steps taken, the hours of activity of the child during the day, the duration of sleep.

Also, parents can remotely assign daily tasks for the child. To do this, in the mobile application, you can select a standard task or create your own. There are many variations of tasks – such as doing their homework, cleaning their room, washing the dishes and brushing their teeth.

To motivate a child to exercise, a mini-game has been developed. The child needs to be active 60 minutes a day or on time to complete all tasks from the parents in order to gain access to the next level of play.

Another feature that was not in the bracelet of the first generation – the ability to compete with other children in a two-minute quest. As soon as the contest ends, both children will be able to see who won.

Vivofit Jr. 2 is a very high-quality, beautiful and useful device but, despite its beauty and usefulness, there are some drawbacks.

Here, in essence, there is only a pedometer. There are not many such useful features as a pulse sensor, GPS, SOS buttons, and the possibility of calls and messages. That is, there are few functions.

Also, the size of the tracker can be cumbersome for the child, while the screen is small.

What is the result?

The first activity tracker by Garmin is designed to encourage children to be active and help around the house. A child, through the game, can perform different tasks and have more exercise. But if you need to control their location, then this tracker is unlikely to suit you.

6. Fitbit Ace – Activity Tracker For Teens

Fitness trackers in 2013, fitness trackers have become very popular. Since then, various variants appeared, but they were all for adults.

In 2018, Fitbit introduced its first children’s device. It is quite suitable for older children.

What do parents get?

The child is provided with a gadget that will occupy them. The tracker offers daily tasks for the user who receive messages or virtual badges from their parents.

The application offers two viewing modes – parent and child. The first gives adults the opportunity to track the progress of their kids, while the second gives access to the personal of the user, where they can view all their achievements, and also change the settings using the Fitbit program.

This is a very useful gadget for parents, but there is one central issue.

If you need to know the location of your child, then, unfortunately, with this device you cannot do it. Fitbit Ace does not have a GPS tracker.

What about charging? The device is able to work without recharging for up to five days. This is a good indicator, but some customers note that after a few months the battery begins to discharge faster.

Also, another negative is the fact that the tracker strap may be too small. Consider the wrist size of your child before purchasing. The tracker is adjustable from 4.6 inch to 6.1 inch in circumference.

Summary: Fitbit Ace activity trackers allow children to organize real competitions and win virtual trophies thus allowing them to create friendships. They can compare their achievements directly on their wrists, without removing the accessory, but they can also exchange messages or congratulations in the application.

Such a tracker will not give you the exact location of the child, but it will keep an eye on the night’s rest so that you know if your child is sleeping well enough. It tracks the duration of sleep, sends a reminder when it’s time to go to bed, and allows you to set a silent vibration alarm.

Looking for a cheaper option? Smart watches for children from the Chinese company GBD are made for you.

GBD already had a similar device and they improved it thus creating the GBD Gen3 Pro smart watch for kids.

More attention was paid to the functions of watches and their efficiency. Let’s take a look at them.

This watch has 5 useful features: walkie talkie voice chat, games, photo camera, fitness tracker-pedometer and time-limited parents control management.

We’ll go through everything now.

In terms of communication, this is not kids phone watch, but a walkie talkie. You can communicate with your child using voice messages. It is also possible to send images via chat.

You can also send photos that the child has taken on their watch. It uses a 1.3 MP camera. For a smartphone this is not good quality, but for a children’s smart watch it is enough.

The camera is not the only entertainment for the child. There are 12 puzzle games and a voice changing game. These games are primarily aimed at the development of logical thinking.

If parents believe that a child should not get involved in games for a long time, they can put restrictions on the use of games.

Parents will also like the fitness tracker-pedometer function. It shows how active the child was during the day.

Unfortunately, the location function was removed and there is no SOS button.

From all of this, we can conclude that this kids smart watch is a good toy for children from 3 to 7 years. Older children will perhaps not be so interested.

Kids Smart Watches Buying Guide

How we chose

SpecificationsYou may notice that children’s smart watches are very different from each other in their characteristics. If there is a GPS in one watch, then in others there may not be one. But anyway, every watch has its own peculiarities. The price, precise location, a large number of games and more. This review presents those gadgets which have features I can discuss.

ReviewsWhen I was looking for the best gadgets for this review, I came across a huge amount of smart watches for kids. Many of them had no reviews. This does not mean that they are bad. This means that I prefer products that have already been tested. I tried to include in the list of smart watches that already have reviews.

UsefulNormally you are buying a gadget for yourself, but here, with children’s smart watches, you have to take into account the interests of the child. When making this list, I singled out for myself the criteria of usefulness for both parents and children. Below is written about the features of smart watches. If you read them, you can easily choose the criteria of utility.

Why consider kids smart watches

Unlike a smartphone, children’s smart watches have a lot of useful features. They are small, securely fastened on the arm and at times cheaper.

This gadget also often has games (often educational) and cameras that will entertain your child.

What else?

You can choose a watch with GPS functions, SOS button, activity tracker and one that has the ability to make calls so that when your child is not with you, you have peace of mind.

If you have an older child, then it is worth thinking about purchasing a more serious gadget. Here it is better to have a fitness tracker, pedometer and other functions for analyzing activity. At the same time, teach your child to analyze the information received and use it to improve the effectiveness of sports activities.

Features to look at

Design

When you choose a smart watch, pay attention to the design. The choice depends on the age and gender of the child, as well as their individual preferences of course.

The point is that, kids love bright colors. Just look at the design of childrens’ playgrounds. Bright colors inspire a playful and happy mood.

The design attracts the child’s interest in the gadget. Also, if it is made in the form of their favorite cartoon characters, then they will definitely love it.

As for older children, then perhaps the opposite is true. As a rule, in adolescence, a teenager wants to appear older. Here it is better to choose gadgets with a minimalist design and one color.

Parental Safety Features

If you choose a smart watch for your child, then most likely you are wondering how you can help to control your child. You probably want to know where they are and immediately be aware if something happens.

The watch will help you to determine the location, the SOS button and remote control also helps to give you peace of mind. GPS is also used to determine the location. Sometimes WiFi, LBS, GLONASS and even Chinese BeiDou can be used with it. This is done to increase accuracy and continuous operation.

Some smart watches with GPS have a safe zone function. Thanks to this, parents can set restrictions on the movement of the child. If they leave it, then a message about this will appear on the parent’s smartphone, which is synchronized with the clock.

The SOS button allows the child to immediately let you know if something has happened to him. As a rule, you can choose three numbers and they will receive a notification at the same time.

The remote control feature allows you to hear what is happening next to the child. Some watches that have a camera also allow you to see it what is going on.

Communication

For communication kid’s watches are used as a phone. The child can call, send text or voice messages. To do this, you need to purchase sim card for smart watch.

If your watch uses the WalkieTalkie, you can only send voice messages. To do this, you need to synchronize them with the parent smartphone.

Fitness Features

So that parents can monitor the activity of the child, some smart watches have a sleep duration tracker, as well as a pedometer, and a feature that tracks the hours of activity child does during the day. With the help of some gadgets, parents can stimulate the child to activity via the creation of daily tasks with achievements and competitions.

With some watches, the child can even swim due to its waterproof protection. Before buying, look at the IP rating of the water. This will show you how well the gadget is protected from dust.

Applications and Games

Children love to play, and in many smart watches aimed at children you will find games for the development of logic and games that stimulate movement. However, not all smartwatches have a large number of entertaining applications. Depending on what you want, pay attention to the amount of games available on the device.

Also, children will love if there is a camera. Some watches have photo editing applications like Snapchat.

If you think that a child may be distracted by a gadget at school, then you need to buy a smart watch with usage control. This allows you to select the time at which the functions of the watch are limited.
